Send pictures of your SHS pet to our Happy Tails e-mail account and we'll post them on-line! Please include your pet's name, when they were adopted and anything else you want to share.

Our Kennel Manager Sara bottle fed Pearl as a foster pet and decided to give her a forever home.

This is "Oppossum." Her name at the time of adoption was Helena. She is going to be a therapy dog. She is so gentle with my children. We love her so much. Thank you SHS for everything you do to make these pets lives better.

I'm Shelby and I was adopted from the Shelby Humane Society (hence my name).  I was so sad to be in the kennel because it was crowded and I was with three other brown dogs.  I was thinking, "I'm just a plain brown dog who is 3 years old, who is going to pick me".  Then in came my new family.  They said they wanted an older dog because older dogs know how to behave, are potty trained, and don't need as much attention as a puppy. I thought, "That's me! That's me!"  I couldn't believe it when they picked me!  They were just visiting Birmingham and they took me home to Dallas, Texas.  During the long ride I wondered where I was going.  When we got home, I found out they had another dog....a Big Great Dane named Chief.  He was adopted by my family a few years ago and he was wishing for a new friend & so they got me.   He liked me right away and shares all his stuff with me.  As you can see, we are the best of friends and my new owners say I'm a very good dog!  They say adopted dogs are the best because they really appreciate the good life you offer them & they want to please you.  I totally Agree!

We adopted Danny just before Christmas.  Danny was surrendered as part of a litter in August and was the only one left when we adopted him.  My son and I just wanted a quiet kitten - yes, that is a tough combination to find!  We struggled with adopting a few week old kitten vs. an older cat.  We could not be happier with our now 7-month old Danny.  He is the best kitten/cat we have ever had.  We could not ask for a better friend.  He will amaze and amuse us with his agility and skill for playing with whatever is available, but he is intelligent enough to know when its quiet time for the family.  When its time to rest, we all rest, including Danny, even if it is on top of one of us.  He is quite content to curl up on our stomachs or on our lap, or our backs...well you get the picture.  Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to have such a wonderful friend and companion.

I am sending a picture of our dog Spirit that we adopted from your shelter about 4 years ago. She was called "Lisa". She is the sweetest and smartest dog in the world and we love her so much.

I adopted Annie know as "Sweet Pea" last June at the Columbiana
location and she has been wonderful. I would tell anyone looking for a dog to check your humane society first. It has some great dogs that need some loving.

I am Jessie.  I was adopted in 1999 from SHS.  I am a registered therapy pet with Hand in Paw. I help challenged children cultivate compassion and self-esteem. I go on long walks with my family and I make sure that everyone stays together as a family unit (that's what herding dogs do!).  I love my family and they told me they were blessed that we found each other.  Thank you SHS for being there for me when I was looking for my forever family.

Here is Adrienne.  We adopted her about 2 1/2 weeks ago and she has been wonderful.  It took a little time for our other animals to adjust to her, but now they are all doing much better with each other.  I have not been able to get many pictures of her yet because she is VERY camera shy.  Every time she sees me with the camera she runs and hides.

UPDATE: I just wanted to send you an update on Adrienne (Babe). We have had her since February and she has been wonderful. She has turned out to be EXACTLY what we were looking for. She gets along well with our 5 cats and 3 other dogs, she is friendly to people we know and protective of us around strangers. Sevaral time a week my husband and I have the same conversation about how good she is and how glad we are to have her. By the way, she no longer runs everytime I pull the camera out. Thank you for all of the work that you do.

Meet Gryffyn and Jet.  (Sahsa and Braxton were their shelter names.)
They are thick as thieves and have made us whole again after the death of our beloved Roscoe.  I can't say enough about Shelby County Humane!  They love them as their own! God Bless them!

Here is a photograph of our new family member, Queenie.  She now makes her home in Massachusetts after being adopted at the Stratham NH SPCA center on 2/10/07 where she was sent by the Shelby Humane Society.  This picture was taken on her first full day at home and you can see that she settled right in.  We recently lost our 14 year old dog to cancer and were apprehensive about bringing in a new dog so soon but once we met Queenie we knew she belonged with us.  She has already become friends with our 3 cats – a must in our house.  Since my husband grew up in Alabama it’s like having a little piece of the South up here in Massachusetts.  She experienced her first New England blizzard last week and while I can’t say she enjoyed having to “go out” in the middle of it she appeared to understand that it’s part of life up here

This is Graham.  He was adopted from the Shelby Humane Society on Feb 9.  He is now 11 1/2 weeks old.  He is a great puppy, lots of fun.  At the time of adoption his name was Able, and we have recently found someone who has his sister.

We brought Aubie home on February 3, 2007.  She is a joy!  Aubie loves to play with her toys and be held!  She was known as “Anna” while at the shelter, and will be getting together with her brother Graham (also adopted from the shelter) so that they can play together. We are so thankful for our precious puppy.

This is Frizzy. She thinks you can’t see her! Our family adopted her from the Shelby County Humane Society in August 2004. She is a wonderful, loving girl who enjoys her walks, treats and hiding in the hostas.

This is my baby, Tiger. I know he looks a little weird... I caught him as he was yawning!

I apologize for not contacting you sooner.  My mommy kept telling me to e-mail you and let you know that I am doing great.  My name has changed from Yum Yum to Angel because my mommy thought I was such an angel when she brought me home.  But I showed her that I have a little (ok a lot) of devil in me.  I love to race through the house and torture the dogs.  I have three siblings and one human sibling (him, I could do without; he doesn't know how to pet me like I like to be petted).  My other siblings are Sinclude an 8 year weim, Spencer; a 7 year old daschund, Bailey; and a 7 month old boxer puppy, Buster.  Buster came with my Daddy when he moved in and he is the most fun to torture (Daddy and Buster)!

I'm Cilla. My new mommy adopted me two weeks ago. I was so excited when she put me in her car, I knew I had a new loving home to go to. We rode all the way to Birmingham and the whole time I sat in the passenger seat near my mommy. When we got home I heard her telling friends how well-behaved I am. The day after my mommy brought me home, she bought me a pink rhinestone collar. I feel so pretty and am treated like a princess. I have all kinds of fun toys to play with. I also have a little brother who is a Chihuahua that thinks he's a German Sheppard. We're getting used to each other, but I think one day we will get along. My mommy gives both of us plenty of love. Oh one more thing before I go play, my mommy gives me all kinds of yummy treats for sitting and laying down and after I go out and potty, she also told her friends that I came house broken...whatever that means. I hope you adopt some of my friends at the shelter, they are really good guys and I miss them, but there's no place like home.

My husband and I adopted Mojo from you about 5 years ago and he has been the best dog we’ve ever had! We’ve always owned purebreds up until Mojo and he has been the smartest, sweetest, prettiest dog we’ve ever had. He’s spoiled rotten but very healthy with the exception of getting allergy shots! Anyway, I just thought these pictures were so adorable and that you might want to see one of your former tenants living it up. He’s brought joy to everyone he’s met!

This is Maxi. She is part lab and very sweet!

We adopted Cody ( formerly Named Tot ) from the Shelter in 2002. He is a true joy. He is super sweet and is very talkative. He comes when he is called and loves a good belly rub. He has 2 fur brothers Frodo, our Siamese and Buzz our rescued Golden. He sleeps every night curled up by my head. We love him and want to say thank you for all of your work at the humane society for helping people like us find wonderful fur babies like Cody!

I am from New Hampshire. My family and I adopted Pearl yesterday. She wasn't here long and found a good home. She is a very good dog. I'm so happy we got her. We have a lot of snow up here and she is so funny in it. She is doing very well. Thanks for sending her.

When our little Muttley (also adopted) passed away in Sept. 2006, our house was simply not a home without her. So, several weeks later my husband and I went to the shelter to find another dog to love. I looked for the most pitiful, saddest, least likely to be adopted, older dog, which was Bengy. He shook like a leaf when we held him and we knew then we had to take him home. After about a month, his real personality began to show. He is the most beautiful, loving, sweet, fun, funny, well behaved dog we've ever had. As you can see from the picture, his bottom teeth are crooked. His top lip gets caught, which makes it look like he's snarling or snaggle toothed. It's the cutest thing you've ever seen! Pets are God's gift of unconditional love to all of us. Thanks so very much to Shelby Humane for saving this angel for our family!

I adopted Maddy Lou and Gus a month ago and wanted to let everyone at Shelby Humane Society know that they are both doing wonderfully. The kittens' pound names were Ren and Bertha. Gus has gained a least one pound since I got him and gets closer to Maddy's size every day. They usually sleep in the same bed, as this photo illustrates, even though they each have their own bed and they get along fantastically. They eat at the same time from the same bowl. drink water at the same time, play and sleep at the same time and always together. They are both so friendly and affectionate and have made my apartment a home. Maddy loves to perch on my shoulder and is always very chirpy and vocal; Gus is more laid back and mellow. Their two personalities work really well together and have provided me with non-stop entertainment watching them play. They love listening to birds on my screened-in porch and playing with their toy mice covered in fake fur. I appreciate all the good care they received while they were at Shelby Humane Society. They have both been an amazing joy and blessing in my life.

We just adopted Bosco, and all four of our pets are from Shelby Humane Society! Pickles is really enjoying having Bosco as a playmate. She needed some doggy companionship – since the cats just don’t want to have anything to do with her!

A thousand words won't describe the joy my adopted pets give me every day. It was my turn to give them a 5 days to run, swim and jump at a campground just for dogs.

We had been looking for a dog after losing our beloved Maggie and into our lives popped Trixie. We made a stop (something I have never before been able to get my husband to do) at the shelter and she just "found" us both. We both fell in love with her great big smile. She has become such a big part of our family. As you can see, she and my daughter are best buddies! We are blessed to have her in our lives and thank you guys for the job you do :)

I adopted Presley from SHS in August 2006. She was an owner turn-in and I liked her name so kept it. Presley is the petite fawn cocker in the picture. She was 1st runner up in the Shelby County Reporter cutest pet contest in December 2006, model for High Style Pet Boutique and will be on a float in the 2007 Doo-Da-Day parade. She is feisty, full of life and her mamma's "baby girl."  Cash was adopted from a local rescue organization. Because of Presley's (Elvis) name, her "brother" was named Cash (as in Johnny). Cash has more of a "3 Stooges" approach to life and a sweetness that touches all who meet him. Both bring laughter, love and joy into my life everyday.
Thanks to everyone at SHS for what you do!

My name is Chakra. (My name was changed from Cha Cha.) I left Shelby Alabama in February and went to Conway Humane Society in Conway, NH. Boy, what a change in temperature. It had this white stuff on the ground that was really cold on my paws. My people came into look at me the day after I arrived and they took me home. I was so excited. I have two older brothers too! They are cocker spaniels too. They have been showing me the ropes. I got a brand new dish...with my name on it no less( well...I can't read, but they told me it was my name. I got all sorts of new toys too! My people own a great big house with a big barn and have lots of land to run and sniff. I just can't seem to sniff enough. Now, if only that white stuff on the ground would go away. I am really happy in my new forever home. Thanks for giving me the chance of a lifetime.

Hi, I'm Gus, I was adopted on Friday October 13th of 2000, a superstitious day for some humans but a wonderful day for me and my Mom. As you can see by my pictures, I love to swim no matter how cold! Mom tries to keep me out of the water when I go outside but I can be a little "hardheaded" or so I'm told. That's me in the middle with my other brothers, Doobs on the right who is almost 6 years, and Willie on the left, he's also 6. Mom says I look like a coffee table, I like to think of myself as well-rounded. I just wanted to let you guys know that I'm doing well, oh did I mention that I have my very own futon?!

My husband and I are thrilled to have Kammie (aka Sammie)! She was adopted at the SPCA in Stratham, NH in March and she now has made herself a cozy forever home in the woods of Maine! She enjoys her 3 mile runs at 6am, car rides anywhere and of course, her belly rubbed. We feel so blessed to have her. Thank you so much for your efforts to bring these wonderful dogs to New England.

We adopted Boxer and Bullet (now known as Zach and Cody) from your shelter on April 7, 2007. As you can see they have become fast friends with our 5 year old cat, Elliott. They have brought such joy to our lives. Thank you SHS.

This is Smokey that was adopted by my friends, Jim and Brooke, from SHS. Smokey got his name because of the fact that his new Daddy is a big U of TN fan. They now live in TN and Smokey has a new friend – Grant. They are big buddies!

We adopted Bama and Buckeye (Toby and Tibby) on June 5th, 2007. They are puurrfect little kitties. We are so glad we didn't separate them (they are brothers) and took them both home from the Shelby Humane Society. One's rambunctious and one's a sweetheart. They love to play with each other all the time, running full tilt around our house chasing each other. They play hard, but when nap time comes, they can always be found sleeping on top one another, as the picture shows. We love them a lot already and they are more than happy in their new home with us. Everyone needs to adopt a pair of kittens! Thanks so much to the Shelby County Humane Society for all you do!!!

Sweetie was an SHS dog. She was adopted about 4-5 years ago, Sweetie is around 7 years old. Sweetie is a Pekingese Chihuahua mix. When we adopted her she had a broken hip. She was known as "Sweet Pea". As by how she acts we can tell she has had a few litters in her past. Sweetie has recently had surgery on her mouth for a chipped tooth that was infected. Sweetie now lives with duke, (the fawn pug) Dutchess, (the black Pekingese). They all love each other dearly. Thank you SHS for giving us a miracle.

My name is Janet Parker and I adopted Lexi from the Shelby County Humane Society 5 years ago. She has been the best dog and is truly my best friend!

Thanks to all the employees and volunteers of the Shelby County Humane Society. You all do a great job!

We adopted Ashley from the Shelter in 2005. Her shelter name was Bittey because she was the runt of a litter that had been given up for adoption. She was the last one left of the litter probably because she is female and small. Ashley got her name when she was a puppy because she found a comfortable place to sleep in the chiminera and would be covered with ashes. She became fast friends to our Siamese cat who was a kitten when we brought Ashley home. We love her so much and she has been a great companion and best friend. She loves to fetch, talks to us, neighborhood children love her and sometimes wear her out playing with her. We added a 1 year old male Golden retriever and she is jealous if he gets any attention - she is adapting to not being the only canine child in the home. They play tug a war, fetch and share their toys.

We adopted CRAZY Shady and have re-named him LOUIE!! He is doing great and is loved very much in his 'forever-home.' He has learned to sit, give paw & speak... he was house trained pretty much from day 1... he is well adjusted and loves his new family and as well the Vet gave him a clean bill of health!

We are very happy and thankful to have the such a great dog who loves all of his toys and spends half the day laying on his back or licking your face off!!

We are a family of 3 that includes a 7 year old who loves him very much too, he is great with kids! Thank you for sending him to New Hampshire with his short legs, long body and big head! We love him!

Please know that he has found a family that will take great care of him, keep up the good work! Thank you!

Bark! We are Lily and Bear. We were adopted on July 13, 2006 at SHS and boy are we grateful! Our Humans are so good and loving to us. They take us on walks everyday and our favorite activity is going to Oak Mountain State Park to chase furry squirrels up trees! Lily, spotted dog in front of me, is my mommy and we are so lucky to still be together. Many thanks to SHS for taking us in but we are so happy to be in our new home. Bark Bark!

Hi. My name is Mona and I am spoiled rotten. I was adopted from PetSmart on 280 from the Humane Society about a year ago. They thought my name fit me so we kept it. My owner is a little girl who thinks I hung the moon. My grandfather claims he is allergic to me, so we have air purifiers on every floor of the house. I like to snuggle up close to my grandfather to prove to him that he is not allergic to me. I also like to sleep on top of my grandfather so he can't turn over. I have numerous portraits of me, handmade cat bowls, and all the cat toys I could want! Thanks for taking care of me until they came and got me. You guys are great!

We chose little Hickory, now Bo Hickory, from the Shelter 15 months ago, and he is such a joy to us. He is the best buddy, and we love him to death.  He goes everywhere with his dad, and even helps us deliver Meals on Wheels. He loves going on trips with us, and the picture above was made at Cloudland Canyon, GA. He would love to locate his brothers, Dickory and Dock, who were adopted before he was, so they might have play dates. We extend our thanks to each of you who do such a great job and care so deeply for all the animals at SHS and for planning the New England trips that enable so many of them to get loving homes.

We adopted Jack (formerly known as Rascal) a year ago from the SHS. He has been a great addition to our family. He provides us with endless hours of joy and entertainment, and he's also a great companion for our two cats. We love him so much, and we are so blessed to have him in our lives.

Our family adopted Roscoe last Fall at the Columbiana Humane Society his name was Chump there.  He has been such a wonderful addition to our family!!!!  We couldn't have chosen a better animal he is so loving and wonderful with our children, he tends to think he is a 10 lb. dog so of course he is always in your lap on the recliner watching TV  and in the bed at night with you which we are completely use to now.  Thank you so much for blessing us with such a wonderful animal.

This is Bruce Leroy, now Leroy Tooter Brown!  I adopted him in June of 2006.  He is a healthy, happy dog with a brother Koda and a sister Peanut and living on 5.5 acres.  He is the best dog I have had and he just loves the water.  I am so happy that he came into my life.  Not a day goes by that I don't smile because of him, my sweet boy, Leroy.

Here is a great picture of our girl, Lucy.  We adopted her about 4 years ago from your Columbiana shelter.  We wanted a smaller dog that wasn't hyper but would play.  When we walked in and around all those cages the other dogs were jumping, barking and going nuts.  Lucy (her shelter name was Jessie) just sat and looked at us as we went by.  Besides being a beautiful golden color, her behavior just caught my eye.  When we took her into the meet and greet room she immediately climbed in my husband's lap and looked at him.  We were hooked.

Since then we have had more kids and Lucy has always been so gentle with them.  They have done everything under the sun to her - including pulling parts, sitting on her and coloring on her back with markers and mascara.  She endures it all and is so even-tempered.  I tell everyone that she is the BEST dog that we could've ever gotten.  Even if we had custom ordered one it wouldn't match her.

I often wonder why someone gave her up.  She is so sweet, patient and loving.  But their loss is my family's gain.  I miss that I never got to see her as a puppy - I bet she was adorable.  But that's the path our lives have taken.  Thank you for sheltering this dog so we could "rescue" her.

I just wanted to write and thank the people at Shelby County Humane Society for taking care of my precious puppy boy.  I first went to the Birmingham Humane Society because that is that one that is near me but at that time they were out of puppies, so I went to came down to y'all.

It was my first time visiting the Shelby Humane Society, and could not believe all the animals in need.  I truly believe that I was meant to go to Shelby County shelter and that my puppy was there waited for me to come and find him.  When I came, he was in the  puppy room in the middle row, first column just sitting there looking at me, he did not have a collar with a name or number.  So, it took a little while for me to find out about him.  They told me he was 9 weeks old, and his name was Leon.

When I pick him and adopted him (on Aug. 1, 07) and tried to get him to walk on a leash or even walk by a person it became clear what his new name would be Tripp.  He has been a joy in my life and he makes me take the time to enjoy life between work and school.  Plus he is a great training for 5K races.

I just wanted to thank everyone that took part in the care and rescue  of my puppy who is now 7 months old and getting bigger every day.  Y'all are doing great work.

I adopted Lil' Bit in late September '07 and I cannot explain what a great dog she is. I originally saw her on the Shelby Humane Society website and was sad to hear she had lost one of her legs from being hit by a car- she seemed like she needed a fresh start so the next day I went to the shelter to meet her, once I saw her there was no way I was going home without her. She seemed very nervous on the car ride home, but right when she walked into her new home she was greeted by her two new sisters, Sadie and Roxy. She immediately became one of the gang and has become good buddies with Sadie- they sleep in the same dog bed every night and sun bath outside together every day- they are inseparable. Despite Lil' Bit's rough past, she is so full of joy and loves to cuddle. Thank you Shelby Humane Society for helping me find such a wonderful and loving dog.

This is Morgan (Le Fay) formerly Dora.  After visiting her for many months at the PetSmart on 280 we decided that we couldn’t live without her. So we adopted Morgan in November just in time for the holidays. She has really become a wonderful member of the family. She has become a surrogate mother for our other cat Merlin and she really keeps him in line when he gets too frisky. She enjoys relaxing in front of the heater, stretching out on the back of the sofa, cuddling up in our arms or laps, or enjoying the outdoors on the screened porch. We can’t imagine what our lives would be like without her.

Thanks for our little lady and for helping us make our family complete.

Hi!  My name is Mitch.  That's what they called me at the Humane Society when my people adopted me in 2004, and they liked the name.  The first picture is the photo from the website where they found me.  I'm told they knew right away that they wanted that cute little kitten named Mitch.  When they got to the shelter, they discovered I had outgrown that "cute little kitten" stage and moved on to become a gangly older kitten with a very long tail who bothered the other cats.  While they were visiting, several people came looking for Mitch, the cute little kitten, and were disappointed when they saw me chasing all the other cats, and not looking so cute doing it.  My people could see my potential though, and knew I had way more personality than all the other cats put together.  Eventually I grew into my tail and filled out a little more, and now I'm quite handsome, as you can see.

I love my people and my home.  I have a big yard with woods that has birds, squirrels and chipmunks for me to chase.  I catch a lot of them.  My people say I'm the most athletic cat they've ever seen, and the funniest too.  Even though I'm getting older, I still run around the house chasing my toys and my people like a young kitten.  I like to "hang on" to the side of the stairs like I'm hanging off the side of a building.  When I do that, my eyes get big like I think I'm falling off.  My people love that. They call me Spider Kitty.  I also love to curl up and sleep with them at night.  My family says they don't know what they would do without me!  Thanks for keeping me until I found a family who could appreciate me.

Yes!!! believe it or not it is I, Chico.... the Chihuahua you all feared.  It has been a month now since I was blessed to join my new family.  I still remember that Jan day and thinking to myself, I will be back soon. Little did I know that  I am home sweet home, finally. I am a "Soldier Boy" now.  My mommy is in the Army and we are currently in Vilseck, Germany awaiting relocation back to Georgia.  I have attached pictures of myself with my big sister MistyLou. She is awesome and has taught me a lot about sharing, discipline and allowing mommy to love me.

I would like to say thank you to Ms. Sara and the staff for not giving up and allowing time for God to send the right family for me.  My mommy just purchased a new home in Villa Rica, Georgia which is where I will be residing once we relocate back to Georgia in a few months.  I must say, I like Germany but gee is it cold here.  My mommy is a blessing.  She has a lot of love and care that is shared between my sister (MistyLou) and me.  She takes us out for long cold Germany walks and rides in our big truck.  Oh!!! boy do I like that.... so you can call me SPOILED ROTTEN NOW!!!  I love them both so much.

I made a big impact on MistyLou's lifestyle, but now we are happy together as brother and sister.  We love to play and eat together.  At times we have our moments where we both want one-on-one mommy time but we have figured out a way to share mommy's love.  Once again THANK you all so very much for everything.

I have to say thank you so much for the great gift we now call Jack. At the time of his adoption he was Berlin.  We had just lost a member of your extended family and not looking to get another dog, but on this rainy Sunday afternoon I was walking into Pets mart on 280 to get a memorial stone for our beloved Layla and there he was!  I knew I was suppose to take him home that day.  I didn't even spend that much time with him before I knew he was already member of our family. We were scared of the reaction we would get from our other dog (Greta) being that her and Layla were very close.  To my surprise it was love at first sight. They took to each other with no conflicts at all!  Its been six months give or take and his personality is still surprising us each and every day.  Layla we can never replace, but Jack has brought a whole new balance to our extended family and we thought we would share some recent photos of our sweet baby Jack.  Thanks again and I hope our story will help someone who is thinking of adoption make the leap!

My name is Caddie (I am the smaller dog in both pictures) and I was adopted from the Shelby Humane Society about ten months ago, Feb. 2007.    My new people drove the whole way from Atlanta, GA to adopt me!  Thank you for putting a great picture of me on the website and telling everyone in cyberspace what an awesome dog I am!  Thanks also to all wonderful people on the Catahoula Rescue Forum who talked me up!!!  Anyway, I wanted to let you know that while I miss 'Bama, I am really enjoying city life in Georgia with my big sister, Abbie.  My sister is also part 'houla and we wrestle all the time!!  We have a big house and a large yard to play in.  I love car rides and going to this place called "Camp Woof," (doggie day care.  I enjoy my long weekend walks and going for doggie gelato with my family.  I do not enjoy going to the vet's office.  I have adjusted very well to my new home and even graduated from school!  I hope to start agility training with my family in the spring.  I will let you know if I win any awards!!
