Service & Programs
When a pet needs a home or when a home needs a pet, Shelby Humane Society can help! We work hard to match the right pet with the right owner. ASPCA trained shelter staff members use the ASPCA’S SAFER (Safety Assessment for Evaluating Rehoming) Assessment tool to help identify potential aggression in dogs—ultimately resulting in more adoptions through appropriate placement. Potential adopters can find pets available here online, at offsite events, and the main shelter in Columbiana. We also have available pets at our satellite adoption centers at PetSmart on Hwy 280 and in Alabaster.
Quick Fix- Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Program:
Our low-cost spay/neuter transport program established in February 2008, provides affordable spay and neuter surgeries and transportation to all area residents. This program also subsidizes surgeries for low-income residents who provide documentation of governmental income assistance. Quick Fix is the first program of its kind in the Greater Birmingham/Shelby County area and to date has helped subsidize thousands of surgeries for owned cats and dogs, greatly reducing the number of unwanted pets in central Alabama.
This program, founded in November 2006, is a volunteer driven transport program providing second chances for thousands of homeless dogs from our area. The Shelter Partners program transports pets from Shelby Humane Society to shelters in New England. Due to comprehensive legislation programs regarding pet ownership and treatment of animals in these areas, the number of homeless dogs in these communities are nearly nonexistent. In an effort to ensure that those that want to adopt a pet in need are still able to do so, Shelby Humane works in conjunction with shelters in these areas to find new forever families for puppies and dogs transported from Shelby County. In almost every case, the dogs and puppies chosen to participate in this program are adopted into loving families within a few days of arriving at these shelters.
Low-Cost Vaccination and Microchip Clinics
Vaccines and microchips are two of the most important things you can do for your pet. Shelby Humane Society offers low-cost clinics during the Fall and Spring months throughout Shelby County to make vaccinations and microchipping easy and affordable for all pet owners. Visit our events page for upcoming dates. Visit our microchip page for details regarding mircrochipping.
When our faithful friends become a precious memory, the first thing we must contend with is how to dispose of the remains. Cremation has become a popular alternative to burial. Using modern technology which is friendly to the environment, as well as dignified for your pet, cremation offers a practical and fitting solution to both disposal and maintaining the memory of your pet. A full line of urns are available.
We sponsor educational programs that cover the full range of pet ownership issues and do our best to accommodate requests for school, church group, and camp workshops
Shelby Humane Society can assist in reuniting lost and found pets. Give us a call or visit our lost and found page for details on placing a lost or found report and doing a walk through to search for your pet.
