Shelby Humane is proud to announce a new partnership with The Shipman Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting military veterans by pairing them with rescue dogs that can serve as loyal, healing companions. Thanks to a generous grant from the foundation, veterans can now apply for the program and receive a companion dog free of charge.
According to the Shipman Foundation, many veterans face challenges such as PTSD, anxiety, and isolation. Companion dogs can play a vital role in improving mental health by offering unconditional love, a sense of routine, and emotional grounding. These dogs may not be certified service animals, but their impact is just as profound.
When the Shipman family saw the opportunity to combine their passion for supporting veterans with their love for dogs, they leapt at the chance. This partnership is about more than adoptions—it’s about second chances, purpose, and healing.
How the Program Works:
The Shipman Foundation works with shelters and rescues, including Shelby Humane, to identify dogs best suited for companionship roles.
Veterans apply through the foundation's website.
After a thoughtful matching process, the veteran is introduced to a companion dog tailored to their lifestyle—at no cost.
Resources and support are provided post-placement to ensure long-term success.
“Every service member deserves the unwavering loyalty of a companion,” the Shipman Foundation shares on their website. “We work to bridge the gap between service members and shelter dogs—providing companionship, support, and healing while reducing the long wait times and removing the cost for traditional service animals.”
This partnership not only changes the lives of veterans—it gives rescue dogs a renewed purpose and a loving home.
“We’re thrilled about this partnership—not only will it provide deserving veterans with loving companion animals, but it will also help more of our dogs find their forever homes,” said Leah Eagle, Public Relations Manager at Shelby Humane. “It’s a win-win for everyone involved.”
Veterans interested in the program can apply online at shipmanfoundation.com or visit Shelby Humane in person to find a dog that fits their lifestyle and needs. Once matched, the foundation offers ongoing support and resources to ensure a successful transition for both the veteran and the dog. Watch our segment on WBRC-6
